We asked 100 MPs and senators about public health care. Here’s what they told us.
In February, more than 200 health care workers and advocates travelled to Ottawa for the Canadian Health Coalition’s annual Parliament Hill Lobby. Our volunteer lobbyist teams met face-to-face with 100 MPs and senators, pressing them on four key issues: health care funding cuts, enforcing the Canada Health Act, expanding pharmacare, and supporting frontline health care workers.
Now you can read what we heard.
Our new report documents the responses, by party and by name. Find out if your MP was one of the 100 parliamentarians we met with and read what they told our volunteers.
Among the findings from our meetings:
• 66% of Liberal MPs supported enforcing the Canada Health Act, including pausing health care transfers to provinces that allow financial barriers to care.
• 75% of Liberal MPs agreed that federal money should not go to private, for-profit providers. Only 25% of Conservative MPs felt the same.
• 75% of Liberal MPs supported expanding pharmacare. Among first-time Liberal MPs, 25% were neutral on the question.
• Parliamentarians across all parties agreed that frontline health care workers should have a voice in the future of public health care.
We are sharing these results so you know exactly where your elected officials stand. As the threat of privatization grows and laws like Alberta’s Bill 11 challenge the Canada Health Act, we believe this kind of transparency is essential.
