1. For-profit clinics take staff & funding away from public hospitals for easy, uncomplex (profitable) procedures, leaving behind complex “unprofitable” patients to the public hospitals with fewer staff & resources to care for them.
2. The Ford gov’t is paying hundreds of millions for ORs & MRIs owned by for-profit corporations while public hospital operating rooms & MRIs close evenings & weekends – or even permanently – because they aren’t given the funding to staff & run them.
3. Under privatized health insurance, doctors, staff & patients struggle with time-consuming red tape imposed by insurance companies to limit care & take more profit. Denials of care are frequent.
4. Private labs cost more even though they pay staff less & have closed local processing sites so that samples must be transported hundreds of kilometres to centralized facilities, reducing timeliness & quality.
5. For-profit long-term care corporations lobby against mandatory staffing levels & ration access to supplies. They have fewer staff, resulting in poorer outcomes. During COVID they took their profits while their residents suffered neglect & died at much higher rates.
6. Where surgeries & diagnostics are privatized, the evidence shows wait times for most have gone up not down. Private clinics cost more, take away resources from the regional public health system & use resources to sell medically unnecessary services to make more profit.
7. Privatization of cleaning is correlated with dirtier facilities & higher infection rates. Private clinics & hospitals increase pressure to deregulate and replace nurses & health professionals with lower paid staff doing the same job but with less training.
8. Doug Ford is taking a billion dollars per year away from public hospitals to privatize.
9. We are getting fewer procedures per dollar: in 2023, Ford announced funding for private clinics to do 14,000 cataract surgeries per year. They funded the private clinics 20% more per surgery. Public hospitals would do almost 17,000 surgeries per year with the same funding.
10. Last but not least, Alberta passed a health privatization law that brings in user charges for patients & queue-jumping for the wealthy. It’s an unprecedented full-on attack on the Canada Health Act’s foundational principles that public health care be public & non-profit, based on medical need not wealth. If not stopped, it brings in U.S. health insurance corporations & threatens Public Medicare across Canada.
