Students for Public Health Laurier (SPHL) has officially launched as a student-led collective dedicated to translating academic theory into tangible community action. A launch event in the Dr. Alvin Woods Building on the WLU Waterloo campus, featuring Jim Stewart, Chair of the Waterloo Health Coalition.

Recognizing a gap between classroom discussions and the lived realities of Ontario’s health systems, the group provides a platform for students to examine how policy, funding, and social conditions dictate health outcomes. By focusing on health equity and systemic barriers, SPHL aims to equip the next generation of leaders with a deeper understanding of the practical challenges facing the Waterloo Region and beyond.

The initiative emerged from a desire to move beyond textbooks and engage directly with the “on the ground” issues affecting the province. SPHL facilitates this through bi-weekly meetings—held both on-campus at Wilfrid Laurier University and virtually—where members connect with public health professionals and advocacy groups. Through speaker panels and collaborative events with partners like the Waterloo Region Health Coalition, the group fosters long-term relationships that bridge the gap between student passion and professional advocacy, ensuring that public health remains a consistent, community-driven conversation.

To turn these discussions into impact, SPHL offers a variety of skill-building workshops and awareness initiatives. These sessions introduce students to essential advocacy tools and policy processes, empowering them to engage effectively with local decision-makers. From addressing primary care access to navigating the long-term sustainability of the health system, the group serves as a vital hub for those looking to contribute to real-world solutions.
